Scalpel for a Wand: My Journey to being a Cleft Surgeon
Dentistry found me through my love for both art and science—two forces that, when combined, have the power to heal and transform. As a young BDS student at MGM Dental College and Hospital, I was initially drawn to the precision of dentistry, unaware of the vast world beyond teeth. But as I progressed, I discovered the intricate and life-changing impact of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS).
Halfway through my third year, my first exposure to oral surgery ignited a spark—I knew I wanted to be an OMFS. By my final year and internship, another realization refined that dream: cleft lip and palate surgery was the path I wanted to walk. Witnessing the transformation of these children—seeing how a single surgery could change not just their lives but their families' futures—cemented my purpose.
The journey was not immediate. I honed my general dentistry skills, gaining clinical experience until I secured admission into OMFS at PMS College, Kerala. I still remember the disbelief and excitement of walking into my department for the first time, knowing I was one step closer. While my exposure to cleft cases was limited during post-graduation, I refused to let that deter me.
My alma mater, MGM Dental College, welcomed me back for the MUHS Surgical Fellowship in Comprehensive Cleft Care—a turning point in my career. Every case, every suture, every child's hopeful gaze reinforced my commitment. Today, one year into practice post-fellowship, I find myself still striving, still perfecting my skills for the little smiles that place their trust in our hands.
Each post-op moment is magical—a reminder that we do more than operate; we restore confidence, dignity, and possibility. This journey is far from over, but I am grateful to walk a path where I can be part of a team that truly touches lives.
For those embarking on this road, remember: it takes patience, resilience, and an insatiable thirst to learn. But in the end, every challenge fades in the face of a child’s first unhesitant, beautiful smile.
